Alhamdulillah,
MSA National is pleased to announce the kick-off of your *favorite*
fall semester event: the 3RD ANNUAL RAMADAN FAST-A-THON!!
One of the most
successful national student programs in recent history, the idea of a
Ramadan Fast-a-thon was originally conceived by the Muslim Student
Association at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In a
single day during Ramadan, November 2001, MSA Knoxville helped raise
nearly $500 for a local food pantry and united Muslims and non-Muslims
in an effort to address issues of hunger in our community. For
the past two years, the event has been sponsored by MSA-National at a
continental level, allowing students all across the US and Canada to
participate. The 2003 National Initiative was immensely
successful; about 130 campuses participated to collect over $46,000 to
support local soup kitchens and emergency food shelters.
In this election
year, with its focus on good citizenry, the scope of the Fast-a-thon
can only broaden. Muslims should strive to be model citizens
through civic involvement: voting, volunteering, and participating in
community events. Through the Fast-a-thon, students have the
opportunity to teach non-Muslims about Islam, exemplifying values of
compassion and charity by actively striving to eliminate hunger and
homelessness in their communities.
